ASCE or the American Society of Civil Engineers is an international organization that is divided into 10 regions. 9 of these regions are in North America and the final region – Region 10 – includes all 34,700+ members who reside outside the USA, Canada, and Mexico. You can learn more about all the regions here: https://www.asce.org/communities/find-a-group/regions. Below is a map that shows where ASCE has active sections and groups outside the United States.

Regions have been organized to provide input to the ASCE Society Board of Direction, facilitate communications, help implement the Society’s Strategic Plan, promote leadership development, support the local geographic units, and improve member service within the Society.
As I am a leader in ASCE Region 2, I wanted to break down what our board does and how you might get involved in your ASCE region. Each ASCE Region has one director and several governors. Currently, we have 6 Region 2 Governors and three other roles: Student Member Representative, Younger Member Representative, and MOSAIC Representative. I current serve at the Younger Member Representative for the ASCE Region 2 Board.

ASCE Region 2
Region 2 consists of Central PA, Delaware, Lehigh Valley, Maryland, National Capital, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh Sections, including the Reading, Catoctin, Eastern Shore, Reston, and Northwestern PA Branches. While it is the smallest geographical ASCE region, we still have approximately 10,000 ASCE members within Region 2.
In terms of events, the Region 2 Board hosts a Region 2 Assembly every year and participate in the Multi-Region Leadership Conferences annually. We just held our Region 2 Assembly at ASCE Headquarters earlier this month. We also attend various events throughout our region like the Student Symposium that are hosted by local schools. The Region 2 Board meets monthly virtually and occasionally will meet in person.

Some of my duties as the Younger Member Representative for the ASCE Region 2 Board include calling in for the monthly Board meetings and giving feedback on topics on behalf of Younger Members in Region 2. In addition, I lead the Region 2 Younger Member Advisory Group (YMAG) which is comprised of the YMF and YMG Presidents from all across Region 2. I have greatly enjoyed serving in this leadership role over the past few years!
